Salvi Harps are entirely made from wood, one of the most precious natural materials. Because of this, harps seem almost like living instruments. By following some simple principles and methods, you can keep your harp in excellent condition for a long time.
Home Placement Tips
When not playing your harp, place it in a separate space with the soundboard side close to a wall.
Maintain optimal temperature and humidity: around 20°C ±10°C (50°F–86°F) and relative humidity at 50% ±15%.
Keep the harp away from excessive heat and direct sunlight to avoid damage to the finish, wood structure, and strings. Using an indoor harp cover is recommended for added protection.
Surface Cleaning Tips To protect the harp’s finish, gently wipe off marks or fingerprints with a soft, dry cotton cloth. Note: Do not use solvents (such as acetone or ethers) or furniture cleaning products.
String Replacement Needs Strings are the “voice” of the harp and require regular replacement. They age due to time, environmental chemicals, and player sweat. It is generally recommended to replace the thinner strings (0 and the first two octaves) annually.
Maintenance of the Base Wheels All Salvi pedal harps have wheels under the front legs of their bases for easy short-distance movement without lifting. Avoid moving the harp over rough, asphalt, or uneven surfaces, as this can damage the wheels, cause loosening, or allow debris to clog them, potentially affecting sound quality or causing unwanted noise.
Felt Pad Maintenance The original red felt placed under pedal harps reduces friction and impact on the base when using the pedals, ensuring smooth operation. The felt acts as a buffer between the pedals and the harp. Over time, it wears out, so regular inspection is recommended. If the felt shows obvious wear, have it checked and adjusted by an authorized Salvi technician and replace the felt as needed.
